Resident Evil Revelations Demo - Review

Jill Valentine, before transforming into Nina Williams/Samus Aran. Yes, the buckle is deliberately placed there.
Jill Valentine is hotter as a brunette. That being said, Resident Evil Revelations takes place between Resident Evil 4 and 5, detailing the origin story of the founding of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) by former STARS operatives Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. The game returns the series to its survival horror roots, rather than the action packed game that Resident Evil 5 was.

More after the break.

**
Gameplay is very similar to RE4 and RE5, featuring an over-the-shoulder camera, but includes the wonderful addition of adjusting the aiming sensitivity. The control pad is also greatly utilized to change weapons in real-time and the A button is now a dedicated button to using herbs. Even better, controls can be changed to any number of alternative schemes, including one that supports the Circle Pad Pro, but its purpose seems pointless when RER already has excellent controls alike to Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube.

I made the poor decision to play this demo in the middle of the night with no lights on. Holy shit that was a bad idea, I actually got scared of something I could kill in one hit with my shotgun. There's this new scanner item that is used to find random bullets scattered around as well as various other items, including items relevant to progression. There's one puzzle that uses the touch screen, something I can tell is used extensively to solve most of the puzzles in the game. It seems a bit forced really, although the touch screen is used excellently to change weapons and subweapons as well as constantly displaying a mini-map, something desperately needed by certain Resident Evil games.

The demo is very short and can be completed in less than 30 minutes, but you get a really good idea as to what the game will be like. One thing that bugs me is that the 3DS Shop limits demos to 30 plays maximum before you can no longer play the demo with that 3DS account, but it's just a demo and not the full product.

Supposedly, this game features some revelations that may or may not be required to fully enjoy Resident Evil 6, but it's anyone's guess at this point. I'll probably pick up Resident Evil Revelations when it launches on February 7th.
